Brad Gunkel is a recognized authority in sustainable, community-focused architecture. He has managed the flagship office of McCamant & Durrett Architects (the team that brought cohousing from Denmark to the United States) and has worked with Paolo Soleri (the Italian pioneer of sustainable community design). Understanding the ability of community to empower individuals, Brad brought America its first all-affordable rental cohousing development. He has authored articles and presented nationally on the subjects of urban community development, community-focused affordable housing and holistic sustainability. In addition, Brad provides extensive experience creating state-of-the-art facilities including schools, performing arts centers, health clinics, gymnasiums, offices, libraries, restaurants, child development centers and laboratories.

Gunkel Architecture-300 SquareFor over two decades, in partnership with residential, mixed-use, non-profit and commercial developers as well as various government agencies, individuals and businesses, Brad has managed and overseen dozens of large-scale, multi-faceted projects from the earliest stages of programming and feasibility analysis through community outreach, design, entitlements, permitting, and construction to close-out and marketing. He is respected by owners, developers, planners and contractors alike for his ability to bring the highest level of care, experience and attention to detail to every phase of every project. Brad was also a Planning Commissioner for the City of Emeryville, working to ensure community engagement and progressive, contextual design in the town he called home for several years.
