Sacramento Senior Homes*

Show Description

Berkeley, CA

Punctuating a highly visible corner bridging a major transit corridor and a residential street, this high density urban infill community serves very low income senior citizens, many of whom were previously homeless. 40 housing units sit atop two retail spaces, a parking garage and an activity room, lounge and support service hub. The building is nestled around a quiet courtyard while a large front porch and garden tie the community into the fabric of the surrounding neighborhood.

Sustainable features include passive solar design and photovoltaic power for all common areas. Sacramento Senior Homes received a Design Award from Berkeley Design Advocates recognizing the project’s excellence in design and sensitivity to community needs.

Project permitting and construction oversight by Brad Gunkel while Managing the Berkeley office of McCamant & Durrett Architects.
