Oakland, CA
Brooklyn Arms Apartments will be an affordable housing community for active seniors that includes a newly-constructed 30-unit residential building as well as the preservation and conversion of one of Oakland’s oldest churches into resident amenities, supportive services, and administrative spaces. Together, the two buildings will give new life and function to a beautifully preserved part of Oakland history.
The existing building will be restored and preserved using federal historic tax credits. Exterior elements will be repaired or replaced to complement the original construction. Interior elements, including the beautifully intact woodwork, will be restored throughout. Limited improvements will make the building more accessible and functional as a resident amenity space.
The new building picks up on materials, patterns, and colors of the church while providing a quiet backdrop to the historic building it celebrates. The two structures combine to create an internal community courtyard activated by the large balconies and amenity spaces that surround it.
